WoodEye continues sales in Australia

Latest WoodEye Cross Cut orders are signed by N.F. McDonell & Sons in Mount Gambier and Baywood Products Pty in Maryborough.

N.F. McDonnell and Sons, a family owned business, are currently upgrading and expanding their Finger Jointing Operation.

Looking into the future of our business we realized that for our “new line” to perform to its maximum potential, we were going to need to invest in a scanner, says Mrs Anna Green, Quality Control Manager at N.F. McDonnell.

We are confident with WoodEye at the beginning of our line, our recovery and productivity will rise considerably and the quality of the timber will be far more consistent, continues Mrs Green.

The fact that the WoodEye Scanner inspects and optimises cutting at full production speed and the ability to program in specific requirements makes the production more flexible and open for different business options. The result is maximum yield, minimum waste and consistent quality.

We were also impressed with the “look” of the WoodEye. The fact that it’s compact with all components within the one piece of equipment, meant that we were left with the optimum amount of space for other machinery etc. expresses Mrs Anna Green.

Baywood Products Pty primarily focus on process low grade Slash pine which they dock into shook for finger joints studs. Also Hoop pine clear shook for finger joints mouldings is in production.

In the Baywood production the WoodEye scanner colour cameras is used for detecting rot and blue stains but also for picking up stress-grade markings on the timber for further dock into finger joints productions.

In order to increase production and improve recovery it was necessary to invest in a WoodEye scanner according to Mr Nigel Pedersen, Manager at Baywood.  The fact that WoodEye have a very good reputation in Australia made the choice of scanner even easier, continues Mr Petersen.

WoodEye Celebrates 20 Years and Presents Three Product News at Ligna

WoodEye Celebrates 20 Years and Presents Three Product News at Ligna

In 2007 WoodEye celebrates 20 years of success. As the world’s leading seller of wood scanners and scanner innovations, the company plans to unveil three product news at Ligna: a high-speed planer scanner, an expanded hardwood vision platform, and a user interface that is easier than ever to use.

New solution for high-speed planer mills

“We have noticed an increase in demand for dimension-planed and surface-finished products,” says Leif Erlandsson, President of WoodEye. “At Ligna we are proud to be the first supplier in the world to present a new scanner solution for dimensional planing that can match the speeds of today’s extremely fast planers.”

The WoodEye Sorter will be able to scan up to 2700 ft per minute, matching the speed of even the fastest planers. What is unique about the WoodEye sorter for high-speed planer mills that is being demonstrated at Ligna, is that it not only specializes in dimensional measurement, wane sawing measurement and incorporates a hit-and-miss plane function (measuring unplaned areas), but it also detects defects such as knots and resin pockets.

WoodEye widens the field of vision for hardwood

“Following our successes with the inspection of parquet production, we have now achieved a new breakthrough and are able to widen the applications for hardwood. The new application makes it even easier than before to inspect hardwood,” says Leif Erlandsson.

It is now possible to sort and optimize hardwood with regard to nuances and aesthetic qualities such as edge-glued panels, furniture components, solid flooring and parquet – without any additional equipment. This means that WoodEye can now deliver the same high inspection capacity for both hardwood and softwood.

New, more user-friendly interface

“WoodEye scanners have always been easy to use, but over the past 20 years we have worked hard to make the interface as user-friendly as possible,” says Leif Erlandsson.

“I am very proud, therefore, to be able to present a new graphical user-interface at Ligna. This makes operating a WoodEye scanner even easier than before. The user-friendly interface has always been one of our strengths, but it has never been as good or as easy to use as it is now,” Leif Erlandsson concludes.

WoodEye shows the way to more efficient production control at IWF 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia

Because it enables inspection and optimization at full production speed, the WoodEye scanner system is playing a key role in more and more production systems for automated wood processing. WoodEye Rip is the latest variant of the system, and can optimize the ripping of lumber measuring up to 25” x 4”. The new WoodEye BCS (Board Control System) expansion system delivers more reliable and efficient production flows.

The modern production of processed wood products will be at the heart of IWF 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. WoodEye North America will be there, exhibiting the fourth generation of WoodEye, which can inspect up to four hardwood or softwood surfaces simultaneously at full production speed. Visitors at a total of four exhibition booths will be able to take a closer look at how WoodEye works with software for various areas of application and helps to increase productivity and profitability.

WoodEye RIP –a new dimension in production optimization
Inspecting and optimizing wood that is to be ripped is a nearly impossible task. Often it comes down to making smart guesses and hoping for a decent result. Our new WoodEye Rip opens up entirely new possibilities in this area. The system optimizes the ripping process based on a wide range of product and quality criteria, at full production speed, and is fully objective and constant over time.

More reliable product flows with WoodEye BCS
– Board Control System
Yet another innovation this year is our WoodEye Board Control System expansion system for ID marking or cross-cut marking each board
immediately after inspection. The system maintains complete control over the production flow between WoodEye and other stations for cross-cutting, sorting and intermediate storage, regardless of whether they are located within a single mill, in different production areas or at different sites. WoodEye BCS comes in three versions for different production situations: Board ID, Buffer Control and Cross Cut Marking. WoodEye BCS makes it possible to grow your business cost-effectively by investing in inspecting equipment and keeping your existing cross-cut saws.

Expanded presence in North America

News! WoodEye is wider than ever

The advantages of WoodEye are now available for material up to 650 mm in width. At Ligna we can show you how this could be used when working with edge glued panels, flooring and rip optimizing.
The first application is WoodEye for rip optimizing. WoodEye Rip introduces a new dimension in rip scanning. In addition to traditional black and white detection, WoodEye Rip adds tracheid fiber measurement and high definition colour scanning to the sensoring methods used. This means that sound knots, small cracks and also colour detects such as stain etc can be used in the grading.

In our booth at Ligna you can experience the WoodEye system. It’s fast, flexible and simple to use with a measuring resolution up to six times higher than any previous version. The system can be equipped with colour measurement, hit & miss detection, roughness detection, true thickness, bow and crook measurement, and much more.

The new generation of WoodEye at the Ligna fair

Innovativ Vision has had an eventful year, which has meant a breakthrough for WoodEye in sawmills. To add to this is the new generation of WoodEye, which will be shown at this years fair in Hannover.

That WoodEye has a new exciting design and aspire to become the industry´s most nice-looking machine, is just one thing. More important are the custumer benefits the new WoodEye implies. The new WoodEye is delivered ready to use in the factory, and adjusted to meet every custumers specific demands. It is characterized by user friendliness and flexibility, and besides that it can handle higher feed speeds than ever before! The new WoodEye also works as a platform and can be used together with various external sensors, such as X-ray for stress grading, ultrasound for detection of internal checks, moisture content measuring and deformation measuring, just to mention a few.

New for this year is also the unique colour measuring method based on "inhouse" developed sensor technology. This will be shown in WoodEye Parquet. Innovativ Vision will also show WoodEye Cross Cut equiped with Shape, for deformation measuring. The visitors will also have the opportunity to see custumer-specific software as Furniture and Moulder, and the program for Service & Support, Helpdesk Live through modem connection.

It has been an exciting year for Innovativ Vision, the company behind the woodworking scanner, WoodEye. The last years has meant a breakthrough for WoodEye in sawmills. Innovativ Vision has during the spring delivered presumably the world´s first installation for length feed scanning in trimmer mill environment, to Hedins in Krylbo, Sweden. With this installation Hedins can attain an automatic custumer-specific sorting in an early stage in the production process. Besides that, Innovativ Vision has delivered a number of WoodEye scanners to sawmills, for automatic quality sorting in planing mills and for component manufacturing.

Among new sawmill custumers are many small/mediumsized sawmills, but also large companies. Stora Enso Timber has invested in not less than five WoodEye scanners. This has stipulated the knowledge that WoodEye at this time, is an useful tool for all sawmills that would like to invest in further refinement or production to customer orders.

The Swedish manufacturer of outdoor furniture, Harbo Fritid invests in a WoodEye system as well as Kjelstad Sagbruk & Hövleri from Norway. The third order comes from New Zealand Moulding, New Zealand, a producer of mouldings. The total order value is about SEK 6 million.

Now we see an offensive wood industry with increased investments and we have many exciting projects in pipeline, says Leif Erlandsson, Managing Director of Innovativ Vision. Customer ordered production, "do-it-yourself-products", maximized value yield and processed wood have become key words in our customers business.

Harbo Fritid, one of the biggest outdoor furniture producers of Scandinavia, works with a several number of products. With WoodEye in the production they get a better control of their many qualities and can at the same time minimize waste. WoodEye and its application Furniture ensures that the component is suitable for the end product. The system is going to be installed in September.

Kjeldstad Sagbruk & Hövleri produces laminated timber and contruction wood to Norway and Europe. They will build a new production line with WoodEye after a moulder. With WoodEye and its application Moulder they will get a cost effective production with a high capacity and a better yield.

New Zealand Moulding will upgrade their existing line for the production of mouldings with WoodEye. Today`s manual marking requires a lot of staff and they work in 3-shift. With WoodEye labour costs can be reduced. This will be the fifth WoodEye system that will be installed for the wood art radiata pine. The line will be in production in October.

- Our latest orders show that the trend not only is global but also spread over the whole wood industry. We received order from a medium-sized sawmill in Norway, a specialised producer of mouldings in New Zealand and a producer of outdoor furniture in Sweden, says Leif Erlandsson.

Innovativ Vision´s customers include for example SP-Fönster and Elitfönster in Sweden, Vinderup Traeindustrie and Storke Vinduer in Denmark, Finnforest UK in Great Britain and Finnforest Corporation in Finland. Further customers are Unilux in Germany, Styline Industries in USA, Boulanger in Canada, Meiken Lamwood Corporation and Sunadaya in Japan. The company also works with some of the leading companies of Austria for example with STIA Holzindustrie, Holzindustrie Stallinger, Holzindustrie Leitinger, Systemholz and STLH Lamellierholz Produktions.

Press release Ligna Plus trade fair Hannover, Germany May 21, 2001
Innovativ Vision launches 3 new products for the wood industry

Innovativ Vision, the world´s leading supplier of systems for quality control in the wood industry, is launching two new applications and an optional extra for the company´s WoodEye system at the Ligna Plus trade fair in Hanover 21-25 May 2001.

WoodEye is a complex and flexible system for scanning, measuring and inspecting timber. The system quickly and precisely locates and analyses knots, shades of colour and other defects in the wood, thus rationalising inspection and sorting and providing the opportunity for optimisation of the yield for various purposes. There are currently a total of four applications for the system.

One of the new applications which has been developed is WoodEye Furniture, for manufacturers of furniture or furniture components, which ensures that the component is suitable for the end product, e.g. an armrest or a chair leg. The system calculates which side is to be used, whereabouts on the board the cross-cutting is to take place, and in which direction it should be in order to provide as many components as possible. This avoids excessive wastage and recutting, and what is more the number of complaints can be reduced.

For planing mills and planing lines Innovativ Vision has developed the application WoodEye Moulder. The application copes with the stringent requirements with regard to speed and profile measurement. WoodEye Moulder has built-in technology which compensates for accelerating planks and stoppages in the line. Knots, cracks, resin pockets, blue stains, wanes and dimensional errors are detected at an inspection speed of 400 m/min.

Innovativ Vision´s new optional extra, WoodEye Shape, measures deformations in boards during longitudinal transportation. Properties identified are bow, spring, twist and cup. The application is capable of making correct measurements when the boards are moving at high speed, when they are moving laterally, and when they are rocking or twisting. The inspection speed is 300 m/min (5m/s). WoodEye Shape is targeted at planing mills, sawmills and manufacturers of glulam beams, windows, furniture, glued joints and planed panels.

"It´s exciting to be exhibiting two new applications for WoodEye. It is a new step for Innovativ Vision to be productifying WoodEye directly for certain areas of use - in this case furniture manufacture and planing. This will make it even easier for our customers to automate their production," says Leif Erlandsson, managing director of Innovativ Vision.

LATEST IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY IN USE AT KARL PEDROSS AG

Karl Pedross AG is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of veneered solid wood strips. This family business, with a 100-strong workforce at its two plants in Latsch/Südtirol, produces around 17 million running metres per year. It exports 90% of its production and has a presence in most European countries. Every year, about 16 000 cubic metres of sawn spruce timber and 1.3 million square metres of veneers are processed in its modern production facilities.

Since 1996, a WoodEye scanner linked to two ‘PAUL’ crosscut saws has been used with considerable success for quality assessment and optimization in production. The WoodEye scanner, which operates on four sides, inspects and precisely analyses the wood surfaces for all kinds of knots, cracks, resin stains, colour patches and dirt, and measures the dimensions. Inspection and analysis take place at full production speed, which is designed to feed two crosscut saws. Advanced sensor systems use various techniques to scan in images of the surface of the wood. Parallel networked computers perform the extremely complex calculations involved in cutting to length and optimization, transmit the cutting position to the saws, and control the mechanical systems.

“The accuracy and reliability of the WoodEye/Paul line have prompted us to invest in a further system of the same type. The new plant was installed in May and is already in production,” says Herr Karl Pedross, Managing Director of Karl Pedross AG. “The commissioning of the new optimization line represents a consistent continuation of our programme of investments in the latest manufacturing technologies at Pedross,” points out Herr Pedross.
